The Engine Control Computer Module or ECM / ECU in the Volkswagen Beetle is location on the driver side of the upper dash. We recommend using an interior panel removal tool kit.
Plastic interior panels are prone to damage and cracking from age. Work slowly and always apply even pressure to plastic interior panels.
Start by sliding the center section on the center of the dash toward the windshield, then lift up to removed this panel.
Next you’ll want to remove the three torx T20 screws from the center of the dash that are next the windshield. These are in a tight location because of the limited space from the windshield.
Once these are removed, pry up on the upper dash panel to remove it.
Next remove the plastic cover that is located on the driver side upper dash. This panel is held in place by a sticky adhesive and 4 or 5 T20 torx screws.
The ECU is located on the right side, directly below the plastic panel. It is held in by a couple of plastic clips.
Now is a good time to change your cabin are filter that is location of the passenger side.
This ECU uses two electrical connectors. Check the connection and wiring of the ECU for burnt marks or corrosion due to water damage on the circuitry. Burn marks will typically be black while corrosion will be a blue or green powder. These are the most common failures but shock, excessive heat, mechanical wear or vibration are possible reasons for failure as well.
