Replacing the front CV axles on a Saturn Vue is a good DIY project that you can do at home. A bad front CV axle will typically have symptoms of thumping or popping when taking turns.
Start by removing both front wheels and tires.
Spray the saturn vue’s cv axle 34mm axle nut with penetrating oil and let it soak.
You will need a 34mm 6 point deep socket. A 12 point 34mm socket will NOT work.
Have someone press and hold the brake pedal to lock the brake rotor in place. Using a jack stand for support, loosen the 34mm axle nut with a larger breaker bar.
Once the nut is turning and loose, use the jack stand to keep the axle from turning as you can use a racket to finish removing the axle nut.
Here is the axle nut removed:
Unbolt and loosen the tie rod.
Unbolt the lower shock mount bolts.
Use a hammer to tap the bolts out.
You can now lay the spindle forward and have the room to remove the cv axle. Be careful not the over stretch the brake line.
